Magazine Cover - Literacy Activity

A structured, literacy‑rich task where students design a magazine cover for Sky’s World. Two differentiated versions are available (Years 1–2 and Years 3–4). The activity can be teacher‑led or author‑led, with clear instructions, prompts, and stop‑and‑check moments.

Students choose a theme, select costumes and props that match their idea, pick words from a curated word bank, and build a simple sentence or headline. This supports vocabulary, sequencing, and purposeful decision‑making.

Read‑Aloud + Follow‑Up Activities

2026–27 Paid Pilot Programme for NZ Primary Schools

What activities are available for schools

2026 - 2027

Sky’s World Author‑Illustrator led sessions for NZ primary schools that blend literacy, visual storytelling, simple decision‑making, and light SEL elements. Schools can choose from two core activities:

Each session begins with a full read‑aloud of Sky’s Secret Garden, setting the context for the activity and supporting classroom discussion.

After the read‑aloud, schools choose one of the following follow‑up activities:

• Collaborative Patchwork Poster — Students each add a piece of real fabric to help build Sky’s dress together. This introduces light SEL themes by showing how individual contributions combine to create something stronger as a group.

• Individual Black‑and‑White Activity Sheet — A simplified version of the activity with clear prompts, supporting vocabulary, sequencing, and personal expression.

These sessions encourage engagement, creative thinking, and collaborative learning.
